Body and Appearance

1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?

Kiriko is about six feet tall and skeletally thin. He is toned (something he’s kept up since his days as a soldier), but still manages to be bony and frail and insanely underweight.

2. How old is he?

Kiriko is actually 38. I have a detailed explanation of his age here. He ages very rapidly due to stress and illness. As his father was immortal, it’s pretty ironic.

3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?

You might think he would, but Kiriko actually doesn’t stand up entirely straight. He has a constant slouch to him, both from sickness and from a lifetime of carrying around heavy machinery (his suitcase that is always with him probably weighs about 40-50 pounds). His awkward height has something to do with it, too.

4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?

AHA Kiriko’s health is an abomination. Not only is he extremely underweight for his height, he’s just plain malnourished and frail.

He actually does have onset lung cancer and knows it. Does he care? Not really. He even continues to chain-smoke. I tend not to mention it because I know other characters would be like omg teh drama!!!, but Kiriko just... got over it. In his time, there wasn’t really a way to cure it, so you really just had to accept it. And it’s not like a criminal on a worldwide watch list could just saunter into a hospital and receive therapy. So he’s kind of indifferent about his condition. Maybe on Thor he’ll get help when it gets bad enough. You know how he is.

Also, his liver is shot to hell because of a parasite he had not long ago. Half of his liver is gone and the rest is very weak. And yet, he continues to drink and smoke. What a guy. xD

TLDR: He’s lucky if he lives for another ten years. 8D

5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?

He moves gracefully and fluidly. It makes him seem gentler and more ‘earthreal’ to his patients, as he wants to appear as an ‘angel of death.’

6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?

Kiriko is not attractive (anymore). While he was very good looking in his soldier days, stress, trauma, PTSD and living on the run destroyed his standards for himself. He’s not hideous, but he does perceive himself to be. Since he isn’t one for forming relationships, he doesn’t really care what he looks like to others anymore. But because of his job, he wears very regal and almost aristocratic clothing to balance it out and make himself seem more professional and inviting.

7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?

His complexion is fairly pale. His skin is pretty unhealthy, too.

8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.

His hair is naturally a light blond, that has turned almost completely silver and even slightly white since the war. It’s very, very thick. He wears it long (as long as his sister wears her hair, aha), occasionally thrown into a ponytail when he needs to get mechanical work done.

9. What color are his eyes?

Blue. Since the manga was in black-and-white and the creator only did... two colour drawings of the character (in which they were grey), his eye colour is different in every series. In the manga, a point is made that he and his sister have very light eyes (though it is never said what colour they are). So while some of his icons I have for him might give him brown eyes, they’re wrong! 8D His father’s eyes are blue, so for genetics’ sake, Kiriko’s eyes are also blue.

10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?

He has a very pronounced ‘western’ nose to Japanese standards. It’s one of his facial features that keeps him from looking entirely Asian. Tezuka’s work tends to accentuate physical differences between characters to show their nationality more easily. In some chapters it’s long and straight, like an ‘american’ nose. But in other chapters it’s more hooklike; but either way, it’s not asian at all.

His cheeks are also caved in from starvation. Tezuka almost never uses screen tone, but Kiriko’s cheeks are coloured in with it... which is probably why Tezuka didn’t draw him too much, because it must have been a huge bitch to go against his usual style xD

Also, his chest down to his stomach is covered in syphilic scars because of a parasite he contracted. His stomach also has a few, er, stretch marks from when the parasite started to grow...

11. What are his chief tension centers?

His shoulders are a big one.

12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?

His wardrobe is very formal, very dressy. It consists mostly of blacks and browns. He always wears a white accessory with it, usually a scarf or a cravat. Once in awhile he’ll wear an ascot, which makes me smile.

The only tones he’ll wear that are not earthy colours are his scrubs (it‘s actually a Japanese Doctor‘s uniform, but he uses them as scrubs), which are blue in the anime (but were white in the manga).

Sometimes in the manga and in a lot of art produced nowadays, Kiriko wears lot of white, to contrast the main character (so, in their case, white represents evil and black represents good). My response to this is: sure, why the hell not.

13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?

His clothes are actually pretty big for him, to give the illusion he has more body mass than he really does. While he’s well-toned (and he is), he’s still very skinny.

14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?

He dresses the exact same. When it is very hot outside, Kiriko puts on a dress shirt and calls it casual. Or alternatively, just wears his scrubs.

15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?

....I don’t even.
Actually, none of the above. Kiriko wears long underwear, at least in the manga. He’s from the nineteen sixties, okay?! On Thor he’d wear briefs though, because his... er, most common choice?... is outdated.

Speech

1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?

In the English dub, which I prefer, Kiriko’s voice is higher-pitched than average. It actually suits him very well. It’s dreamy and comforting when he‘s dealing with patients or someone he cares about, but still harsh and snappy when provoked.

In the Japanese version, Kiriko is usually played by a famous actor (he’s played by a different guy in almost every version) with a deep but still airy voice. I prefer his English voice, myself; if you read Ayako, that voice fits so perfectly with Kiriko’s first soul.

2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?

His voice is sort of… medium-toned. He’s soft when he speaks to patients, but very firm and strong in casual conversation. Kiriko thinks very quickly about what he wants to say, is very clear and to the point, and doesn’t mince words when there’s something he needs to get across.

3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?

In the English dub, he has a quasi-British accent ahaha I don’t even know, he’s not even British.
If you could consider this a verbal tic... when he gets angry, he loses all his formality and speaks very crudely. Don’t piss him off if you can help it 8D

4. What language(s) does he speak, and with how much fluency?

He grew up speaking Japanese, but learned fluent English by the age of ten and spent his teenage years speaking it. It serves as his default language (as in, on Thor, he’s speaking to you in English). He also fluently speaks French, Portuguese, and speaks a bit of Spanish, and a bit of German.

5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?

No, not really.

6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?

He thinks on his feet, and still manages to be eloquent about it. But if he gets flustered or angry, all of that goes out the window. 8D

7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?

Very eloquent and polite. In the Japanese version, Kiriko actually speaks in Keigo, a very formal way of speaking. It’s more or less the same in the English dub.

Ironically, he was pretty informal in the manga! He put a lot of jokes and sarcasm in his normal speech. It’s sort of whiplash when you transition between the two. xD I prefer to think he does like to speak professionally, though.

Mental and Emotional

1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?

Kiriko is very intelligent, in both street smarts and book smarts. This is sort of balanced out by his inability to form relationships, and by the fact that he has very little confidence in himself.

2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?

I’ve said this before; he’s a quick thinker, for better or for worse. Sometimes, his quick judgments can end in violence, for he tends to not consider the consequences of his actions until much later.

3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?

He’s a logical man. He’s not one to give false hope, or to believe in something that won’t likely happen. If he has the time to consider, he tends to thinks things through to the probable end, and operates as if it would surely happen, with no room for chance.

4. What kind of education has the character had?

This is interesting, because while Kiriko may be a genius, he never had a good formal education. He was home schooled by his mother and father, and spent his late teenage years up until the war getting a kind of ‘informal’ education from his father about medicine. I’m sure he attended university for a time after he got home from the war, but not for long; he was more focused on getting out there and providing euthanasia than learning how to heal. He self-taught himself a lot of what he knows, but knows just as much as any Doctor who went through medical school would. Don't worry; when he patches you up, he knows exactly what he's doing.

5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?

Firstly, euthanasia. Kiriko knows precisely how to kill, precisely the way he wants it. He can provide a euphoric, happy death; a sterile, painless death; an agonizing and torturous death… anything his client might ask for. He has found every conceivable way to manipulate the human brain into killing itself. Poisons are a specialty of his as well, though he much prefers to use his machine (which controls the brain) instead.

Secondly, he’s very musically inclined because of his mother, who was a musician. Also, he’s very good with machinery, and built his death machine from scraps. And, on occasion, he is a talented Doctor. Just don’t catch him when he’s in a bad mood or he might kill you by mistake.

6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?

An introvert.

7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?

He’s very moody. He’s usually very nice if you don’t piss him off, but once you do, he’ll hold a grudge forever. And that'll be when you start seeing his mood swings appear...

8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?

He tends to be pretty relaxed around new people, unless he’s heard that they disagree with him. Even if he has so much as a suspicion that they won’t get along, Kiriko will be very rude to them. And while he doesn’t try to avoid people, he tries to avoid making lasting relationships. If he deems a connection has gotten too close, he acts progressively colder. This doesn’t apply to love interests, however.

9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?

React. He won’t get into anyone’s business without reason.

10. Which is his default: fight or flight?

Run the fuck away. It’s a criminal’s mantra. Unless your name is Black Jack, then he’ll try to kick your ass first (and fail at it nine times out of ten).

11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?

He has a very dark sense of humour. Occasionally, he’ll crack a joke during a very serious situation (before confronting Black Jack with a terminally ill patient: “Are you really going to keep healing the incurable? You get an ‘A’ for effort!”; or after letting Black Jack see his disfigured, swollen stomach covered in hemmorhagic blisters, he laughs and says “Hah! Not easy on the eyes, is it?”).

12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?

Kiriko has PTSD. He deals with it by murdering thousands of dying people! 8D

In all seriousness, he does. Killing those who beg to die is his way of comforting himself, knowing that he was denied death and believing he‘s doing something good for those people. It helps relieve his stress.

13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?

-The War
-Being excommunicated from his family
-Meeting Black Jack
-His Father’s Death
-Contracting Gumma
Even though the last two were very recent, it still managed to change his outlook on life.

14. What does he fear?

Kiriko is most afraid of being hanged. He also dislikes knives, understandably; and if anyone were to point a knife at him, he’d probably lose it on them. Being terminally ill, or contracting Gumma again is another one of his worst fears. And though he wouldn’t admit it, he’s also afraid of losing one of the few people he cares about.

15. What are his hopes or aspirations?

He wants to become a euthanasiast that history will never forget. Along with this, he wants to have a family and raise an heir to his legacy. And secretly, he’d like nothing more than to finally get over the war.

16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?

Kiriko is very family-oriented. He loves his own relatives (though, now, only one may still be alive), and desperately wants a family of his own before he dies (a death he believes will happen very soon). He doesn’t want anyone to know about this in fear that it will make him seem ‘needy’ or clingy.

Relationships

1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.

LOLOLOL-
/ahem

He killed both of them! :3 His mother when he was 20, and his father quite recently.
Kiriko really cared about his Dad. Though he was the reason behind his death, he still considers it an accident. Of all the thousands of lives he’s taken, killing his father is his biggest regret. I half-assed an essay about Kiriko and his father on an earlier entry, if you’re interested (which you’re not).

2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?

He has a little sister who he loves very much. She pisses him off so much, but she’s still family. While he is allowed to make her cry as much as he pleases, if anyone else does the same, he will kill them in the most painful way imaginable. So keep your hands off of his sister.

3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?

Nope, and if there is, he doesn’t know about them. In headcanon, the George family was a very successful and wealthy line, but Kiriko is the final heir of the head family. The branch family is sort of... looked down upon, in a way. They’re a very patriarchal family, so any females who married became disconnected from the head family, so Kiriko wouldn’t know about them.

4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?

Nooope. :3

5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?

If best friend means the person you most want to drive a knife through their smug face, that would be Black Jack. They met when Black Jack was still young and right after Kiriko was discharged from the war. Their relationship grew sour as they aged, however, and the rest is history. They still get along every once in awhile, though…

6. Does he have other close friends?

None, unless you count Michelle, the woman he is affectionate towards and makes a point of meeting up with every... year or so, in an affair sort of sense. Kiriko is a lonely dude.

7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?

He does not make friends. He does not play well with others. If you’re his friend, it’s because he’s using you for something. Not in a malicious way, but in a sort of ‘I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine’ outlook.

8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?

Family, by far.

9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?

He’s single, in canon. It’s hinted he has a fling with Michelle of the OVAs, but it’s not serious, as much as he might want it to be.

10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?

Kiiiind of. See above.

11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?

I’m not even going to pretend to know about his first crush. Er, extreme head canon action here but, I don’t consider Kiriko completely 100% straight; so in all honesty, it was probably a fellow soldier (even if he would never ever ever ever ever admit it was a “crush”, no, it was admiration, of course! All teenagers feel admiration!).
His latest crush in canon is Michelle Rochasse, a French porn star from the OVAs. He saved her life, and they hit it off pretty well. She's a nice lady. He'd stay with her, if he could.

12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?

Compatibility, more or less. If they’re a kind person who is willing to look past his physical and mental scars, chances are, he’ll be interested. ...He also looks for a hint of obedience. If there’s going to be constant nagging or bickering, he won’t be able to stand it, so he needs someone that would silence at his word for sanity‘s sake.

13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?

No, but he really wants kids. He’s getting old.

14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?

Black Jack!!!!!!!!!!! …And the police from time to time. :D

15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale?

He’s a two. He prefers women, but a male lover isn’t an impossibility.

16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?

Sex makes children. Kiriko wants children, so he wants sex. And that’s pretty much it. He can live without it just fine.

17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?

…I don’t think he has any? If someone were brave enough to remove his eye patch by their own accord when they were making out, I bet he’d be really turned on, but… o_O

Beliefs

1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does he fit type?

I do not know it. And I’m too lazy to guess, because I don’t like classifying characters into them, anyway 8D

2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?

Mm, spiritual. He makes many references to "God” in both the manga and the anime, saying Doctors are a sin and whatnot. While I don’t think he’s quite Christian (though I have the feeling his father’s family might have been Catholic), he definitely does believe in some sort of “God.”
Interestingly enough, he is judged by canon, and his soul is destroyed and reincarnated as penance for his sins. Yaaaaaaaaay...

3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
His ideas of what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ are seriously warped. He believes (almost) wholeheartedly that murder of the ill is good, even if it’s violent or unnecessary, if it’s done in order to prevent pain.

The death of his father really confused him, though, as well as his own recent brushes with death. But he’s far, far, far, far, far off from changing his mind. I think he’s too late to be saved from his ideas.

4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?

Holy shit, if you disagree with him once, he will never like you again. Probably.

5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?

Because his family is so patriarchal, he is sort of sexist. Not in the chauvinist “stupid inferior woman, get in the kitchen and make me a sandwich” kind of way, but more in the sense that women should lead traditional lives and stay out of harm. He’s been to war, he’s been ridiculed in his work, he knows what it’s like to be destroyed, and would never want to wish any of that upon a woman. His sister is pretty much 100% fucking useless and a huge, coddled, spoiled crybaby, and his mother was very traditional and subservient towards her husband; so really, that it the extent of his knowledge about women.

Daily Life

1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?

He’s rich, but living on the run, he doesn’t make much use of it. He just drifts from place to place, making himself comfortable enough to survive. Criminals can’t have much of a choice.

In Thor, having a stable place to live and an income confuses the shit out of him. He’s put his money away unless he really needs it.

2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?

Hoooo boy. When he was younger, his father was a household name, and he was a very famous kid. He was supposed to be the heir to the Noir Project, a famous research program run by his father that developed an elixir of immortality.

But after the war he rebelled against that, and was pretty much forgotten by the rest of the world when he was denied his inheritance. Still, he calls himself “Dr. Kiriko” and not “Dr. George” to avoid that association. ...Besides, Dr. George was his father. Don’t call him that... That’s just weird.

Those that do know about him from the media see him one of two ways, as a hero far ahead of his time, or as a serial killer who has no regard for the sanctity of life. The canon is nice enough to let you make your own judgment on which one he really is (sometimes).

3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?

In canon, he lives on the run, so he has no official home. His sister’s place back in Canada is an okay place to go once every five years, too. Really, as long as he has a place to sleep, he’s satisfied. I bet he has a few “safe houses” here and there, but nothing he’d consider home.

On Thor: He prefers to stay away from his room, when he can. He doesn’t like associating with people, especially room mates, so he just crashes at an acquaintances’ place when he can. Sometimes, he’s been exhausted enough just to rent a hotel room and sleep in privacy.

4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?

Parts for his machine, transport, and hush money. He needs a way to travel around the world without ever being caught, after all, so most of his euthanasia fee goes into those who help keep him a secret. But if anyone started blackmailing him, he’d just kill them.

5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?

Do you really need to ask? Kiriko is a Death Doctor. And yes, he’s amazing at it when he isn’t being a whiny bitch over Black Jack’s involvement. In truth, he knows he’d be much happier doing other things (such as being the musician he’s always wanted to be), but he’s too old and in far too deep to turn back, now.

6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?

He loves art, music, and travel. His free time is mostly spent composing songs.

7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?

Kiriko tries to avoid eating, when he can. Trying to find a place to eat without being seen, or cooking for himself, is just an obstruction to his day. If someone cooks for him, though, he’d be very grateful.

Kiriko drinks every so often, but not in excess. His shitty liver would give out on him.

Associations

Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is his favorite:

1. Color?
Blue.
2. Smell?
That “pine trees in winter” smell.
3. Time of day?
Evening, just after dark.
4. Season?
Winter. It’s nostalgic.
5. Book?
I don’t really know, but I have the feeling he’d like Hemmingway (though I can’t confirm this as I’m not the kind who reads classical literature orz).
6. Music?
Beethoven!
7. Place?
Japan.
8. Substance?
What? ...Tobacco?
9. Plant?
Easter Lillies.
10. Animal?
He doesn’t really like animals. He hunted them and made them into rugs and coats as a teenager. Now the most they do for him is eat through his tent at night and steal his food D<
